The problem: High Maternal Mortality rate in Nigeria
Maternal health remains a critical public health challenge in Nigeria, with the country contributing 19% of global maternal deaths.
The major factors leading to maternal crisis include:
Lack of Risk Assessment & Early Detection
- Many pregnant women do not receive proper risk evaluation, leading to preventable pregnancy complications and fatalities.
- High-risk cases often go undetected until severe complications arise, increasing the likelihood of maternal and infant deaths.
Outdated & Inefficient Hospital Record Systems
- Most healthcare facilities in Nigeria still rely on paper-based hospital records, making it difficult to track a patient’s medical history.
- Paper records are easily lost or damaged, resulting in mismanaged healthcare information and delays in treatment.
Limited Access to Quality Maternal Healthcare
- Rural and underserved communities face poor access to antenatal care, leading to inconsistent medical supervision during pregnancy.
The lack of real-time data sharing among healthcare providers limits timely decision-making and emergency response.
AI-Enabled Smart Card for Pregnant Women
We believe that the ability to leverage digital health systems can enhance care and reduce adverse birth outcomes in low-and-middle income countries like Nigeria. One area of focus is the stratification of pregnancy risk to ensure that patients are put on the appropriate care pathway. This can enable tertiary facilities to focus their constrained resources on high-risk pregnancies, while low-risk pregnancies are managed at lower levels of care. Antenatal Risk Stratification (ARS) is a portfolio of data that predicts a pregnant woman’s risk of experiencing adverse birth outcomes in early pregnancy.
A risk and needs assessment including obstetric medical and social history must be carried out to ensure that woman has a flexible plan of care adapted to her own requirements for antenatal care. There must be effective systems of communication between all team members and each discipline, as well as with the women and her family.
At OBA Global Citizens, we are leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital health innovations to transform maternal healthcare in Nigeria. Our AI-powered maternal health smart card replaces traditional paper records, ensuring that every pregnant woman receives personalized, data-driven antenatal care.
